You Had My Back

Intro

Hey — (yeah) — uh-huh

Phone buzzin', my name on the screen, but it don't mean a thing

Verse

Kahlan left my number on read, left a message half-sweet

Said she had plans, but left me on the corner of maybe and cheat

Locker slams, cafeteria lights, I was walking small

She was picking fights with everything I thought I was

I learned to laugh it off, learned to hide the bruise

But the hallway knew the truth, my grin was just a ruse (oh)

Then Kiara slid up with a pizza box and a grin

Said, "Forget her, man, we got a whole night to win" (yeah)

Pre-chorus

She stayed when the rest of the crowd turned away (stayed)

Stood up for me like the sun breaks the day (hey)

Kiara, you carried me when I couldn't stand

You held my name like it mattered in your hand (oh-oh)

Chorus

Kiara, you had my back, you had my back (you had my back)

Kiara, you had my back, you had my back (oh-oh)

Kahlan walked out, left me off the map

But Kiara, you had my back, you had my back (yeah, yeah)

Verse

We parked on the roof and we watched the talk fade low

You said I was more than the jokes she used to throw

We traded band tees and some dumb inside jokes

You roasted her name but you saved me from the smoke (ha)

Mom said move on, but I didn't know how to heal

You taught me small victories and how to feel real

When my songs turned shaky, you sang the parts I missed

Kept me steady like a metronome with your fists of fist bumps (hey)

Pre-chorus

You showed me how to laugh without sounding fake (laugh)

Taught me how to take my heart off the brake (go)

Kiara, you pulled the truth out from my chest

Said, "Boy, you're golden — don't settle for less" (don't settle)

Chorus

Kiara, you had my back, you had my back (you had my back)

Kiara, you had my back, you had my back (oh-oh)

Kahlan left her name like a bruise on my track

But Kiara, you had my back, you had my back (yeah, yeah)

Bridge

Now I walk taller, yeah, I move a little slow (move slow)

Learning how to love me before I let anybody know (let 'em know)

Kahlan was a lesson, maybe she'll learn someday

But Kiara, you're the reason I still find my way (hey, hey)

(na-na-na) Kiara, (na-na) you saved the day

(na-na-na) Kiara, (oh) you cleared the gray

Chorus

Kiara, you had my back, you had my back (you had my back)

Kiara, you had my back, you had my back (oh-oh)

Kahlan is a chapter that I won't bring back

But Kiara, you had my back, you had my back (yeah, yeah)

Kiara, you had my back, you had my back (you had my back)

Kiara, you had my back, you had my back (oh-oh)

Outro

You had my back — (you had my back)

Yeah, you had my back — (yeah)
