Those Opposing Paul at Corinth This is quite a broad and intricate topic. Who were these people? How did they present themselves? And what did they say to the Corinthians to try and turn them against the very founder of their church, the Apostle Paul? The only information we have about these people comes from the Apostle himself, of whom they worked so hard to discredit. Paul writes in opposition to them, using language and expressions he uses nowhere else. It’s quite a conundrum to try and piece things together. It is also most enlightening! These men came to Corinth after Paul had already established the church there. They claimed to have brought with them “recommendation letters” from Jerusalem and told them, “you can’t trust a guy like Paul who doesn’t have such letters endorsing him like we do.” 2 Cor. 3:1. And they put down Paul as failure because no one likes him. Everywhere he goes he gets on the wrong side of the law, starts riots, and gets the punishment he deserves. But Paul addresses them head-on. “You happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different kind of Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed.” 2 Cor. 11:4. “These people are false apostles. They are deceitful workers who disguise themselves as apostles of Christ. But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” 2 Cor. 11:13-14. Paul harshly rebukes the Corinthians, “You put up with it when someone enslaves you, takes everything you have, takes control of everything, and slaps you in the face.” 2 Cor. 11:20. Ouch. Stark, serious rebuke! Mistreating people, using people, is no a sign of godliness, says Paul.
