Following The Promise

The dust was rising on the road back home

Through the hills where the olive trees grow

Mary turned around to call his name

But the silence was all she would know

A frantic heart and a father’s fear

They retraced every step, every mile

Searching the crowds for a twelve-year-old boy

For the light of his innocent smile.

He was right where the foundation was laid

The work of the Spirit had already begun

With the teachers and the men of the Law

They were marveling at the things he knew

With a wisdom that left them in awe

Mary reached out with a trembling hand

Saying, "Son, we’ve been searching in pain"

But Jesus looked up with a peaceful gaze

Like the earth looking up at the rain.
