In a world where 24 teens enter a fight-to-the-death game one Katniss Everdeen fights to take her sister's place. The book is called Hunger Games by Suzzan Collins and the main conflict in it is forcing people to kill others for the government's entertainment. The theme is how a government can oppress citizens. The reasons are: control because the capitol has the people under their command by manipulating them. Forced violence because the capitol forces the people to fight until one person is left. And lastly, the poor economy because the people all live in a place where there is little food, strict rules and they have to hunt in the woods to find food and sell it. Being trapped in an oppressive government means being controlled by that same government. A direct quote from the text that shows this is when Peeta says “No..when the time comes im sure I’ll kill just like everyone else. I can't go without a fight. Only I keep wishing I could show the capital they dont own me”. Pg (142) This quote proves the theme because it shows Peeta saying he does not want to be controlled. A second quote from the book is when Peeta says “I’m sure I'll kill just like everyone else”. This shows that no matter what he does he is still under the capitals control. Another reason that proves this is a quote from the book that says “look how we sacrifice your children and there's nothing you can do about it”. Pg (19) This proves the theme by telling the people there's nothing you can do to save your kids so they have to fend for themselves. Another quote is when the book says”if you lift a finger we will destroy you like we did district 13 “. Pg (19) This proves the theme by telling the people if they did try to save their kids they would die. One more reason is how the capital does not do anything for the economy. The proof of this is when the capital uses their power to manipulate the people into playing their sick games and giving them little to nothing for it. The first quote is when Katniss says “we're lucky to get at least 2-3 hours of electricity that's usually safe to touch”. This shows that the capital does not provide good electricity for the people and that they live in a poor economy. It says in the book that “the coal miners have long stopped trying to scrub the coal dust from under their nails. This shows that they have been doing it for years. Being trapped in the hands of a toxic government means being forced into violence by the capital, a poor economy showing the capital does not take care of the people, and a controlling government. The summary is to not be so controlling like they did with the people by manipulating them into killing others for food. Work together in peace and not kill people for fun.
Lyrics
[chorus]
They own the games, they own the fight
Pullin' strings in the dead of night
Force us to kill for their twisted delight
But we won't bow, no, we ignite
(ignite, ignite)
Break the chains, yeah, we unite
No more games, no more fight
[verse]
District kids, scraped knees and coal dust nails
Huntin' in the woods where the wild wind wails
Two hours of light, buzzin' like a storm
Touch it wrong, and your dreams get torn
Capitol laughs from their towers so high
Sacrificin' our young, watchin' 'em die
"Nothin' you can do," they sneer from the screen
Lift a hand, and you're wiped clean
[chorus]
They own the games, they own the fight
Pullin' strings in the dead of night
Force us to kill for their twisted delight
But we won't bow, no, we ignite
(ignite, ignite)
Break the chains, yeah, we unite
No more games, no more fight
[verse]
Peeta whispers, "They don't own me"
But the arena calls, blood on the tree
"I'll kill like the rest," heart heavy with dread
Puppets on strings till we're cold and dead
Poor man's hunger, empty plates at dawn
Miners coughin' black, workin' till they're gone
No bread, no peace, just the reaper's call
Rise up now, tear down the wall
[break]
[bridge]
No more controllin', no more dividin'
Work as one, no more hidin'
From the woods to the square, hear the people roar
Peace over blood, forevermore
(roar, roar, roar)
[chorus]
They own the games, they own the fight
Pullin' strings in the dead of night
Force us to kill for their twisted delight
But we won't bow, no, we ignite
(ignite, ignite)
Break the chains, yeah, we unite
No more games, no more fight
No more games (no more), no more fight (no more)
[outro]
Ignite... unite... yeah, we ignite
(ignite, ignite, ignite)
