Just One Step

Intro

(ah) Oh — mmm, yeah

Verse

Boys, twenty-six, twenty-two, and my baby seventeen,

I'm calling through the distance, through the places in between,

Two years since we lost him, three since I held you close,

I carry all our yesterdays and the love that matters most.

I know the road got tangled, faces stood in the way,

They pushed and pulled the pieces, turned the quiet into gray,

But every night I'm writing letters with my hands upon my heart,

Saying I'm so sorry, boys, I'm begging for a start.

Pre-chorus

I wasn't perfect (no), I made mistakes (I did),

But none of them belong to you (no) — you didn't deserve the weight,

Please take one step, just one step (one step), let me in,

We'll stitch the missing pieces, we'll learn how to begin.

Chorus

Just one step, come on, just one step, (oh)

Let love lead the way, let love lead the way, (yeah)

Dad's our soldier angel, watching every breath, (watching)

He's with us, he's with us, he's with us — always. (always)

Just one step, just one step, (come home)

Let love lead the way, let love lead the way, (let love)

I promise I'll make things right, I promise I'll make things right, (I do)

I love you more each day, more each day, (more)

Verse

Remember how you laughed until the room went round,

How you made small worlds of wonder from the floor and ground,

You are brave and generous, brilliant, kind and funny,

Handsome, loud, ridiculous — my favorite company.

If words fell sharp or cold, I never meant to hurt,

If silence felt like choosing, that silence wasn't yours,

You didn't do a single thing to earn this distance grown,

You're innocent, you're treasured, you're never on your own.

Pre-chorus

God says you're forgiven (yes), wrapped and held and whole (held),

You won't be without what's needed, He guards your road,

Take one step, I'll take a thousand (thousand), we'll find our way,

I'm here for how you need me, wherever, every day.

Chorus

Just one step, come on, just one step, (oh-oh)

Let love lead the way, let love lead the way, (na-na)

Dad's our soldier angel, standing at the gate, (he's there)

He wants us close together, he wants us close today. (together)

Just one step, just one step, (yeah)

Let love lead the way, let love lead the way, (let love)

I swear I'll make things right, I'm sorry for the pain, (so sorry)

I adore you, I adore you, my favorite men. (my boys)

Bridge

One breath, one hand, one step (one), we can change the line,

Rewrite the broken chapters, let the light come back in time,

I see your futures blazing, I see the gifts you'll bring,

You have a map inside you and a purpose like a spring.

I'm right here behind you, cheering every move (cheering),

I'll meet you where you need me, in the honest light of truth.

Chorus

Just one step, come on, just one step, (come on)

Let love lead the way, let love lead the way, (let love)

Dad's our soldier angel, he's holding u
