Montana Skies

Intro

oh-oh, whoa

Crickets talking to the cornrows, yeah (hey)

Verse

Dust on the dashboard, radio hums low

Two cups of coffee cooling where your hand used to go

Tractor tracks like painted lines across the grain

Your laugh hangs in the doorway like last year's rain

I drove past the river where the cottonwoods bend

Left a note on the mailbox like I might come back again

But the road keeps stretching under a sky so wide

Montana keeps its secrets where the prairie hides

Pre-chorus

And I breathe it in — the space between the trees (breathe it in)

A thousand small infinities, they follow me

Chorus

Montana skies, oh-oh, Montana skies (Montana)

Wide-wide and honest, where my memory lies

Montana skies, yeah-yeah, Montana skies (oh)

You taught me how to leave and how to recognize

Montana skies, Montana skies

Verse

We carved our names into the fence by the county road

You swore you'd tame the winters, I swore I'd never go

But seasons have their own plans and people have to choose

I kept the old guitar and you kept the blues

There’s a postcard on my mirror with a sunburned smile

A picture of a fox that ran across your life awhile

I keep driving toward the place where daylight never lies

Pulling the rearview closer to those Montana skies

Chorus

Montana skies, oh-oh, Montana skies (Montana)

Wide-wide and honest, where my memory lies

Montana skies, yeah-yeah, Montana skies (oh)

You taught me how to leave and how to recognize

Montana skies, Montana skies

Bridge

Campfire smoke and the hush after a song (hush)

Fingers on the frets where everything belonged

Stars spill like coins on a black-silk page (shine)

I trade the city noise for this endless stage

Whoa-oh, whoa-oh (whoa)

Chorus

Montana skies, oh-oh, Montana skies (Montana)

Wide-wide and honest, where my memory lies

Montana skies, yeah-yeah, Montana skies (oh)

You taught me how to leave and how to recognize

Montana skies, Montana skies

Montana skies, Montana skies
