That First Ride Home #1

Verse

I was downtown takin’ care of business,

Walkin’ slow in that Houston sun.

Then my brother Gene pulled up beside me,

Said, “Hop in, man—this ride just begun.”

I saw two pretty girls in the backseat,

Didn’t know fate was lookin' my way…

I said, “Which one of y’all is datin’ my brother?”

And baby, that’s when everything changed.

Verse

Mmm, me and Rose been tight since junior high,

Runnin’ Kashmere halls with dreams in our eyes.

Workin’ hard at Hermann Hospital,

Classin’ up at TSU on the rise.

We knew Gene had a car—oh, we planned it,

Ridin’ daily from the campus to work…

Just two girls with a sweet little secret:

We’d date brothers or best friends, make it work.

Chorus

That first ride home…

Oh, it set our hearts in motion.

That first ride home…

Turned a moment to devotion.

We didn’t know it then,

But love was ridin’ with us all along—

Yeah, that first ride home…

Became our lifelong song.

Verse

Gene and the ladies, they were schemin’,

Tryin’ to get those rides day and night.

Droppin’ off at work and back home after class—

We were four souls that just felt right.

Cousin Felix popped up one afternoon,

And suddenly laughter filled the air…

Didn’t take long ‘fore me and Gene were talkin’,

Flippin’ coins to see who’d love who, fair and square.

Verse

Oh Larry, when you slid into that front seat,

My heart did a little somethin’ brand new.

We talked all the way down through downtown,

Like the world disappeared—just me and you.

And after that ride, Lord, we saw each other daily,

Willie Hall and the crew comin’ ‘round…

Didn’t take long ‘til sweet and easy

Turned into somethin’ strong and sound.
