My mother turns 90 on Saturday. She and I spent my entire childhood laughing and cooking. I know she was a little worried because I did not date, but it was more because I was shy than you know, anyway, she and my father went to every school play, Christmas program, every sporting event, and wrestling match from their third grade through the end of high school for four kids. We always had great food to eat. She is an excellent cook, and she loves to dance with my dad, who is turning 93 in November. She liked Sinatra, Williams, and Martin. She was a kind, indulgent mother who was loyal to her kids to a fault. There were 4 of us from kindergarten through senior year in high school. They attended every sporting event, Christmas program, and other gatherings, and have continued to do so for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. she is older now but her love for he children and her husband still birns brightly
Lyrics
La-la-la, la-la-la, oh-oh
(come on) yeah, uh-huh
You kept the kitchen warm and the laughter loud,
Flour on your apron, radio turned proud,
You cheered at wrestling matches, at every school play,
Four kids on the front row and you never looked away.
You made Sunday dinners like a little celebration,
Pasta and patience, sugar and salvation,
You worried once about me and who I might meet,
But you loved me anyway, danced me off my feet.
You and him in the living room, slow on a Saturday night,
Ol' Blue Eyes on the record, dim the lamp, turn the light.
He'll be ninety-three come November, you turned ninety now,
You still move like the music knows just how.
Mama, ninety years, Mama, ninety years (oh-oh)
Mama, ninety years of laughter and tears (yeah)
You were there for every play, every game, every fight,
You held us like a lighthouse through the fog and the night.
Mama, ninety years, Mama, ninety years (la-la)
Mama, ninety years — we sing it loud, we sing it clear.
You let us be messy and you let us be bold,
Saved all the ticket stubs and the photos in the fold.
You baked our celebrations and patched us up with song,
Indulgent to a fault but you were always strong.
From kindergarten costumes to senior year caps,
From little league wins to those last-minute naps,
Grandkids and great-grandkids spilling through the door,
You clap the loudest, wanting always more.
You hum Dean and Nat at two in the afternoon,
You taught us how to waltz beneath a steady moon.
Hand in his hand you still glow when he pulls you near,
Love like a porch-light — simple, stubborn, clear.
Mama, ninety years, Mama, ninety years (oh-oh)
Mama, ninety years of laughter and tears (yeah)
You were there for every play, every game, every fight,
You held us like a lighthouse through the fog and the night.
Mama, ninety years, Mama, ninety years (la-la)
Mama, ninety years — we sing it loud, we sing it clear.
And when the record spins, you take his hand again, (take his hand)
Two silhouettes in the doorway, two old friends, amen.
You taught us how to gather, how to forgive and stay,
How to turn a Tuesday into a holiday.
(oh, oh, oh — hey-ya)
Mama, ninety years, Mama, ninety years (oh-oh)
Mama, ninety years of laughter and tears (yeah)
You were there for every play, every game, every fight,
You held us like a lighthouse through the fog and the night.
Mama, ninety years, Mama, ninety years (la-la)
Mama, ninety years — we sing it loud, we sing it clear.
Mama, ninety years, Mama, ninety years (oh-oh)
Mama, ninety years of laughter and tears (yeah)
You were there for every play, every game, every fight,
You held us like a lighthouse through the fog and the night.
Mama, ninety years, Mama, ninety years (la-la)
